Instar is a founder-led mechanical engineering consultancy
Instar Engineering is a founder-led mechanical engineering consultancy.
From the first enquiry through analysis, interpretation and reporting, you work directly with Dr Sam Evans.
That matters because the value of engineering analysis is not simply “crunching the numbers” or running software. The value is knowing:
the broader commercial context of your company
what question to ask
which assumptions matter
which method is appropriate
what the results do and do not show
and how the evidence informs your next decision
How I work
The engineering work should remain connected to the decision that matters.
Detailed scoping to understand the problem at hand and the decison you need to make
Identify the simplest form of evidence you need, and the most efficient process to derive this
Make assumptions visible and communicate clearly. The result should help technical teams, managers and other stakeholders understand what the evidence means.
Stay commercially aware. A technically interesting problem is not always the commercially important problem.
I have been on the other side of the table
Before founding Instar Engineering, Sam co-founded Diffuse Energy to commercialise university-developed wind turbine technology.
The process involved acquiring intellectual property, developing the product, raising investment, structural analysis, prototyping, tooling, manufacturing and first sales.
Sam had to make expensive manufacturing decisions as a founder.
That experience still shapes the way Instar approaches client work.
Engineering evidence should help someone decide what to do next.
